Report and update as of December 2011

During October of 2010 the challenge began towrite a grant to winterize the Red Barn that belongs to the Friends of the Wardsboro Library.  Dedicated but inexperienced grant writers Arlene Arellano, Margaret Marple and Cris Tarnay were testing their skills to complete an ONLINE grant application to the VT Arts Council, Cultural Facilities Grant. Their dedication proved successful. The phone call from Montpelier in December announced that the Friends won the award!

The CULTURAL FACILITIES GRANT is funded by the State of Vermont and administered by the Vermont Arts Council and Vermont Cultural Facilities Coalition, VT. Historical Society and VT Dept. of Historic Preservation.  We are grateful for financial support.

The Historic Preservation Trust was the consultant for historic accuracy, energy efficiency, and public building code standards.

  • Carefully remove the old barn boards and sheathing boards
  • Replace any rotted boards with Hemlock barn boards
  • Staple Homeslicker with Typar to the post and beam frame
  • Re-use and replace barn board
  • Spray close cell insulation on the inside of the barn
  • Install Tu-Tuff vapor barrier plus 20” of cellulose loose fill in the attic of the barn

DS Construction was hired to do the Prep-Work; Paul Dlubac III completed the attic area of the barn; and Builders Installed Products furnished the material and labor for the insulation.  The barn now has a R factor rating of 21 in the Exterior Walls, Blockers and Runners, R-28 Basement Ceiling and R-60 in Barn Ceiling. The Demilec Product is approved by the Vermont Dept. of Public Safety meeting the NFPA 286 requirements.

The barn and (some small sections of the foundations of the main library area) now has a R factor rating of 21 in the Exterior Walls, Blockers and Runners, R-28 Basement Ceiling and R-60 in Barn Ceiling. The Demilec Product is approved by the Vermont Dept. of Public Safety meeting the NFPA 286 requirements.Yes we have more to do before the space can be occupied for any events or as library space,  but thanks to the Grant Award we are one giant step closer to the finish line.  This brings us 40% closer to completing Phase II of our long range Barn Renovation Project.

The Winterization project is now complete and the barn will be like our black bear population—into hibernation for the winter of 2011-2012.

We thank:David Sklar of DS Construction, Paul Dlubac, Builders Installed Products for buttoning up the barn, Cultural Facilities, VT. Arts Council, Historic Preservation Trust and the Friends of the Wardsboro Library along with the Barn Committte and the community for their faithful support.

Together We Can!

The Friends are excited to let everyone know that in cooperation with the Library's Board of Trustees, we have embarked on a large-scale fund raising campaign to fund the renovation of the historic barn adjacent to the existing library building. Below is the progress report of the work completed through July 2010.

Simply put, the library has outgrown the space within the Gloria Danforth Memorial Building and needs more room to accommodate the continued growth in both patron visits and in collections. It's time to expand this beloved free public library.

As regular users know (and as listed monthly in the Bucketville News) the library has an ever-growing book collection, audio and visual collections, as well as an expanding computer room - all to meet the needs of community members and visitors alike, children and adults.

We'd like to invite you to stop by the Library at 170 Main Street to see the work in progress and the displays of our vision for the completed Barn Renovation project.

The Barn Renovation Committee is offering Naming Rights to the most important rooms in the completed barn - what a great way to preserve the legacy of a family or loved one! (

We have an ambitious goal, but it is one that we believe is achievable!

Our motto is
Together We Can!
